A WOMAN ASSAULTED.
CHARGE AGAINST BROTHER. AUCKLAND, July 24. At the Police Court Maurice Burns Ward, aged 37 years, was charged that, on June 4, he did assault Florence Boulton as to cause actual bodily harm. A medical man stated that he was called to the house where Boulton (accused's widowed sister) was lying in a pool of blood, with a fracture of the base of the skull. The ten-year-old son of Mrs Boulton said ho saw accused kneeling beside his mother knocking her head on the floor. Mrs Boulton said that when accused came home he asked where his wife was. She did not remember receiving the injuries. Witness did not answer some of the Chief Detective’s questions, and subsequently gave her answers after some hesitation. Questioned regarding the statement made to the detective, she said she had signed it, but didn’t know what state she was in when she gave it. Accused pleaded not guilty, and reserved his defence. He was committed for trial, bail of £SOO being allowed.
