THE MAIN TRUNK LINE.
TRAIFIC HELD UP. TE AWAMUTU, July 22. The breaking of the axle on an eightton coal waggon near Lake Road flag station last night resulted in the holding up of the Main Trunk express for several hours. The coal waggon was part of a train proceeding just ahead of the southbound express, and the trouble occurred in a deep cutting and on a sharp bend. Relief gangs were quickly assembled, bub the work was hampered greatly because of the position the train was in. The southbound express and also a special immigrants’ express were held up at Ohaupo, and the north-bound express was held at Te Kawa. Meanwhile several goods trains were blocked in the siding at Te Awamutu, so that when eventually the main line w-as cleared some trouble was experienced in getting the expresses clear on the main line. It was not nntil 6 a.m. that the congestion was relieved and the main line open again for regular traffic.
