CHESS.

• _ ■—oM. BORIS KOSTICH. The visit of M. Kostieh has awakened a good deal of enthusiasm in Wellington chess circles. M. Kostieh landed there last week, and by his wonderful exhibitions of simultaneous play, both with and without sight of the board, and his instructive lectures has made a great impression. Apart from chess he is a most interesting personality, aa ho has travelled very extensively and is able to converse fluently in nine languages. In visiting this corner of the British dominions M. Kostieh is not actuated by mercenary motives, as his chief desire is to promote a greater love and knowledge of the royal game and help its devotees to improve their play. Never before have chess players in New Zealand had an opportunity of gaining information first-hand from a world-reno wned exponent of the game. M. Kostieh will arrive here from the north on Tuesday and the same evening a welcome will he extended to him by the Mayor in the rooms of the Otago Chess Club. Subsequently the visitor will give an exhibition of “Blindfold” play. On Wednesday night simultaneous play against a large number of contestnts will be arranged, and on Thursday night M‘ Kostieh will give his first lecture.
