An amusing story of the introduction of the telephone was related at a function at Springburn by the Ashburton postmaster (Mr J. Mulvey). The speaker said he had been present at the official opening of the line from Gore to Mataura. The Mayors of both places were present, and, after having conversed for a time, the Mayor at the ceremonial turned and said : “It sounds all right, but you can’t bluff me. You’ve got- ‘old Hugh’ (the other Mayor) stowed away in the room somewhere.”
