OAMARU WINTER SHOW.

A HIGH-CLASS EXHIBITION. OAMARU, May 15. The second Winter Show in North Otago was opened to-day by the Hon. W. Nosvvorthy (Minister of Agriculture-). There was a large attendance, and the entries shoved an advance of 80 on last year. Despite the drought there was an excellent showing of loots and potatoes. The largest increase was in needlework classes, which have doubled since last year. The Taieri and Peninsula Dairy Company beat the Waitaki Dairy Company in factory butter, thus reversing last year’s placing. The judge, Mr A. C. Ross, of the Dairy Division, stated that factory butter was of particularly fine quality, but the dairy butter was only fair. In the fat sheep classes the majority of the awards went to Mr A. Gardiner, and Mr N. Hayes scooped the prizes in Corriedales. The judge of the seeds classes, Mr J. Pre.sland, who has judged all over Otago and Canterbury, stated that the best quality exhibits he had ever seen were to be found in the grain section. Though the entries were- not numerous, nevertheless they wre of a particularly high standard. In opening the show, the Hon. W. Nosworthy referred to the- excellence of the exhibits, despite the worst season that North Otago had experienced for many years. Mr J. A. Macpherson, M.P. detailed the history of the show, and Mr M'Diarmid (Mayor) dealt with the townsneople’s viewpoint.
