AMERICAN PROHIBITION

SHIPS AND LIQUOR. LONDON, July 17. Curious anomalies continue in ” consequence of the United States’s liquor law. Ihe Cunard liner Albania arrived at Plymouth “bone dry,’’ even the medical stores having been exhausted after three days, but the ship carried a cargo of 100 barrels of rye whisky for the English market. The United States liner Leviathan left Southampton “officially” dry, but the passengers took large supplies for their own consumption. One was seen helping a porter to carry three cases of whisky on board. MISAPPROPRIATION OF FUNDS. NEW YORK, July 20. A sensational case which for long has agitated both Prohibitionists and AntiProhibitionists came to a climax to-day when the Grand Jury indicted W. H. Anderson, New York State Superintendent of the Anti-Saloon League, on charges of misappropriating large amounts of the League’s funds. When the charges were first made the Rockefellers, who contributed largely, to the League funds, withdrew much of their support. Anderson has been one of the most vigorous “dry” agitators in America, the AntiSaloon League playing a big part in the campaign which eventually resulted in Prohibition.
