FLOODS IN ENGLAND
DOWNFOUR FOLLOWS HEAT WAVE. LONDON, July 15. There has been an abnormal heat wave in England, followed by torrential rains and floods, particularly in Birmingham. The water is 6ft deep in the Hockley Brook district. Four houses collapsed. Members of the fire brigade and a police roan swam and waded from house to house rescuing persons in the top stories, and carrying them to safety. Many were cripples and invalids. Mothers dropped their babies into the arms of policemen standing in sft of water The river Swalbourne, near Burton-on Trent, overflowed, inundating villages. At Newborough, Hoarcross, and Yoxall the water flowed like a tidal wave through the main streets. Every bridge for many miles around was swept away.
