WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Waihemo County Council was held on Saturday, being attended by Crs G. Ross (chairman), J. S. Miller, H. O’Neill, F. M'Cailum, G. Clark A. Murray, and W. Ritchie. The Receiver of Land Revenue forwarded a proposal that £9 16s should be expended in the Dun back district. —Received. The Public Works District Engineer forwarded authority for the expenditure of £o> in connection with the redecking of Shag River with 16ft 9in best Australian gum..— Received; it being decided, when the engineer's report was under consideration, that the matter ehjyuld be held over. The Town Clerk, Port Chalmers, wrote en closing copies of correspondence with the Treasury officers in regard to the Port Chalmers Borough’s refusal to pay the salary of the clerk of the Licensing Committee, stating that —“We feel it is of very little use trying to fight it out as the Government has us at disadvantage.” It wae therefore jrroposed to pay the amount into the public Account and to debit each of the local authorities with its proportion.—Received. A uumber of replies (mostly favourable) were received in connection with the council’s resolution protesting against the present system in grouped districts of electing members of Harbour and Hospital Boards, etc. The Director-General of Agriculture wrote inquiring if the council had any objection to the proposal that every local authority should be required to take effective action in the destruction of rooks. —Received. The council being the only local body that had not paid its proportion (£ls) towards the preliminary expenses of forming an Electric Power Board district, this matter came up for discussion. It was decided to pay the amount, the chairman explaining that ‘‘there is a chance of getting it back.” Notice of motion as follows was given by Cr Clark: —“That the road between Dunhafik and Macraes be declared a main road in the county.” Mr C. F. Overtoil waited on the meeting as a deputation, and asked that a road into his property at Bushey should be made. —It was left to the chairman and Cr Miller to interview the owners of the property in the vicinity with a view to their giving assistance. Messrs P. J. Callaghan, J. Burgess, D. Ross, and J. H. Macpherson, representing 15 ratepayers, waited on the council and asked that a bridge should be erected in the Blue Mountain Riding across the Shag River Switchback road. —It was explained that the Government had offered a grant of £IOOO. —It was decided to ask Mr B. B. Couston to re port. The Public Works Department forwarded the following suggestion of grouping under the Main Highways Act'Waikouaiti, Waihemo, Vincent, Maniototo, Peninsula, Taieri, Tuapeka, Bruce, and Clutha. —The proposals were approved.
