HANGED FROM A WILLOW
PENSIONER'S SUICIDE. ASHBURTON, July 17. Several old men lately have been dead and dying in flimsily-built huts on the waste spaces of the Ashburton County. A few days ago one such stubbornly appealed to the magistrate against his removal to the official home. There was another example to-day, when an old-age pensioner was fount] hanging from the branch of a willow tree at Riverside, near Ashburton bridge. A boy made the discovery and told Iris father, who cut the rope and informed the police, and the body was removed to the morgue. The scene of the occurrence is singular. The Riverside Settlement consists of about 20 huts built of kerosene tins, canvas, and other material, where the municipality has permitted pensioners to reside rent free for the past 20 years. Every death is now followed by the destruction of the hut.
