INCOME TAX. FAILURE TO FURNISH RETURNS. AUCKLAND, July nu. In the , Police Court, Cyril S. C. Clarke and Harold K. Clarke, two dental surgeons in business at Whang-arei, were each fined £IOO on each cf four charges for failing to furnish income tax returns. The defendants had made no returns for seven years, and the Government had been defrauded of a considerable sum, said counsel for the Crown. There was no suggestion that the defendants had endeavoured to defraud the Government, but they had failed in their obligations. Counsel for the defence questioned the extent of taxation payable, and added that his clients had paid all other taxes. Mr Poynton, S.M., said that, on a triple assessment defendants were liable for £4W)O due to the State.
