MOTOR TRAINS
SUCCESSFUL TRIALS. (From Ocr Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY. July 12. Experiments in the running cf motor trains for local services cn country lines, which have been conducted over a period of years on the North Coast of New South Wales, have been so successful that they are being adopted for numerous other lines. A new and light type motor train, based on the results of the experiments, is being constructed at the railway workshops at Eveleigh. Each will accommodate about 54 passengers, and provision is being made for the carriage al-n of mails, luggage, and perishable goods. The Minister of Works, who had expressed such impatience with the apparent delay in completing the new motors dual he had signified hh intention of instituting a public inquiry into the matter, completely reversed his opinion after inspecting the work at Eveleigh. He announced that Uie progress during the last few months had been highly satisfactory, and that five of the new cars, with engines which were being imported, would be on the tracks within lhree months. He expressed complete satisfaction with the design and the provision for comfort that they contained. It is stated that die car. which, while being lighter than those previously run, will contain motors of about double the horsepower, w ill give passengers a much more speedy service than is possible with the present system of mixed luggage and passenger trains with which country branched aro served.
