SEQUEL TO COAL STRIKE.
HEAVY FINE IMPOSED. WHANGAREI, July 10
Following on the recent strike in the Hikurangi coal mines, the inspector of awards (Air Joseph Hollows) took proceedings in lhe Magistrate's Court against the Hikurangi Coal Miners’ Union to recover £3OO as a penalty for breach of the Arbitration Act, on the grounds of abetting unlawful strikes and aiding the continuance thereof. He proceeded against 12 employees in Foote and Doel s mine, where the dispute originated. The defendants (including the president of the union) were proceeded against as parties to an unlawful strike. After hearing lengthy evidence, the magistrate (Mr Hewitt) imposed the maximum fine of £2OO on the union, and £lO each on the defendant miners.
