DUNEDIN LICENSING COMMITTEE.

ANNUAL MEETING. /lhe annual meeting' of the Dunedin Licensing Committee was held in the Magistrates’ Court on the 11th, when there were present Mr J. R. Bartholomew*, S.M., and Messrs G. Ritchie, W. King, J. Carroll, and F. Hilliker. The Chairman said that the reports of the conduct of hotels during the past 12 months had been generally satisfactory. ! here was still, however, an amount of after-hour and Sunday trading existing in certain quarters and also insufficient care w*as taken in some hotels in regard to supplying liquor to youths under 21. The committee wished to again impress on licensees the necessity of a strict compliance with the provisions of the law*. The committee intended, as far as it could, to see that these provisions were enforced. In most instances the condition of the hotels was satisfactory Inspection of the hotels was undertaken by the committee and also by the City Council officials and the Health Department. In a number of hotels minor repairs would have to be carried out, and in certain cases the amount required to be expended would be considerable. APPLICATIONS ADJOURNED. The following applications for transfer and renewal were adjourned for a fortnight to enable certain repairs or alterations to be carried out:—Captain Cook, Henry M. Allen to John Henry Tracey; Gridiron, George Hinchcliffe to Alfred W. Brown ; Gladstone Hotel, Joseph D. Winter to Henry W. Winter ; Farmers’ Arms, Michael T. Hall to Walter Henry Richards; Prince of Wales, Ernest C. Branson to Charles Hinchcliffe; Shiel Hill (application for a new license by K L. Richardson). RENEWALS GRANTED. Renewed licenses were granted in the following cases:—Bowling Green, W. D. Wyatt; Oriental, T. H. Cahill; Royal Albert, Sarah Laurenson; Robert Burns, J. W. Young; Branson’s, J. M'Kendry; Victoria, J. A. Griggs; European, Annie Ainge; Oban, A. Paape ; Law C-ourts. Alex. Stewart; Criterion, James Murphy ; Excelsior, wTn. Quirk; Wharf, Mary Mills; Wain’s, A. Harvey; Provincial, M. Coughlan; Tattersall’s, Annie Blaney; Empire, Janies Carter; Caledonian, P. Stevens; Southern, A. H. Bedford; Commercial, J. Watson; Grand, D. F. Wark; Kensington, A. Niall; South Dunedin, W. Heffernan. Permission was granted the licensee of the Caledonian Hotel to change the name to “Rugby.” James Francis M’Cormick was granted a transfer from Samuel Dunn, of the City Hotel and a renewal of the license. The Chairman said that the police report as to the conduct of this house was not too satisfactory. The committee considered that the report was very unfavourable, when it concerned one of the leading hotels in the city. The committee hoped to get a better report when the next application for a renewal came before it. The license of the Terminus Hotel was transferred from J. Sweeney and the renewal granted. RENEWALS HELD OVER, Applications for renewal in regard to the following houses were adjourned for a fortnight, to enable repairs to be carried out:— Shiel Hill, Normanby, Crown, Metropolitan, Shamrock, Caledonian Grounds, Parkside’ and Waterloo. WHOLESALE LICENSES. Wholesale licenses were granted to the following:—Murray, Roberts and Co., R. Wilson and Co., W. Scoular and Co., Lane’s (Ltd.), Neil and Co., Milne, Bremner, John M'F. Brown, R. Powley, Thomson’s, J. A, Ainge, F. Meenan and Co., Mackerras and Hazlett, Sun Yong Chong, and Sew Hoy.
