LISTENING-IN SET. LONDON, June 3. Tlie latest wireless invention is a listening-in set contained in a match box. It has a ten-mile wave length. A complete set can be carried in the vest pocket, and it can be sold for 2s. lo connect the apparatus it is only necessary to attach a piece of flexible wire which, when trailed across the room, serves as an “earth,” obtained by connecting a piece of picture or other wire to the nearest gas or water pipe. DAME MELBA’S ULTIMATUM. LONDON, June 3. Dame Melba is the latest opponent of broadcasting. She announced that she would not sing in “La Boheme” at Covent Garden if she was to be heard by listeners-in. Her ultimatum was decisive, and the Broadcasting Company was compelled to announce over wireless that, although Dame Melba's performance was advertised, it could not fulfil it. Hundreds of thousands of people who anticipated hearing her were disappointed. It is stated that Dame Melba’s agents persuaded her that it was not in her interests to allow her 7oice to be broadcasted.
