CANTERBURY GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET.

'(Lyttelton Times, June 9.) Generally speaking business is quiet in fhe grain and produce market. For many lines this is the off season. The potato market is very firm. In spite of the comparatively heavy supplies that have gone forward to Auckland recently, merchants there are still inquiring for further supplies. A report from Auckland states that over 12,000 sacks of potatoes have arrived on the market there since the end of last: week, but the market wa.s so bare that this quantity went into consumption very quickly. The s.s. Whangape, which sailed for Auckland on Tuesday, took about 7000 sacks of potatoes. There is also a better demand front Wellington for potatoes. So far merchants have not increased their offers to farmers, but, if Ihe present good demand from the North Island continues, and if greater supplies do not come forward from the country, than at present', an increase in the ontrucks at country stations prices can be expected. Most merchants are still offering about £7 10s a ton on trucks at country stations for whites, but sales at above this figure are reported to have been made this week. At present the s.s. Kekerangu is load.ng at Lyttelton for Auckland, but it is not known what quantity of potatoes she will take. During the week fowl wheat firmed up in price by Id to Ijd a bushel. Tire reason for this rise is that there is barely sufficient fowl wheat offering to meet the demand. At the beginning of the season millers were out to buy the very best wheat available, and they refused to buy a good deal of wheat which to-day they are prepared to accept as milling quality. This is one reason for the decreased supply of fowl wheat. Another reason is that farmers who have good whole fowl wheat on hand are holding it in the hopes that it will be accepted for milling later on in the year. Probably their hopes will he realised. Garten oats are still very dull. Despite ups and downs in the chaff market, oats have been steady in price practically all this season. At” no time lias the supply been very great, but it has been quite sufficieiit to meet the limited demand. A little business was done this week in seeds in anticipation of the spring trade, but it did not amount to much and prices of all lines i-eniain unchanged. The bulk of the barley crop has now been marketed. Good malting barley is still worth up to Ss a bushel on trucks at country stations. Partridge peas are also just about done, and there is no change to report with regard to them.
