THE SEAT OF GOVERNMENT. CAPETOWN, May 14. The Senate, by 20 votes to 12, rejected a motion to abolish the dual capital system, and to make Pretoria the only capi tal. CHEMICAL PRESERVATION. LONDON, May 15. Small experimental shipments of South African beef which have been treated by a special process, are being imported unfrozen. Ten quarters of beef killed on April 20 have just arrived at Smithfield. The exterior is rather dried and darkened, but the interior is fresh and bright. The cost of preserving a bullock by this process is ifOurpence. BESTOWAL OF TITLES. CAPETOWN, May 15. In the Assembly, Mr Cresswell (Labour Leader) moved an address to the King praying him to refrain hereafter from conferring any titles upon subjects domiciled in the Union. The Prime Minister (General Smuts) said he regarded the motion as a joke. He did not see the need of making any change. The motion travelled far beyond the feelings of the public in that country. Knighthoods had been conferred on many South Africans for distinguished service in scientific, civic, and other walks of life, and why should they not rejoice when someone received a richly-deserved distinction ? A motion to put the previous question was carried by 54 votes to 42.
