CAPTAIN POLLOCK.
DEPARTURE FOR SAMOA. PRAISE FOR NEW ZEALAND. AUCKLAND, May 15. The United States sloop Ontario left for Pago Pago, Samoa, this morning. Prior to her departure Captain Pollock expressed the appreciation of himself and officers for the hospitalities arid courteousness extended them in New Zealand- He said: “You certainly have a wonderful country. The plans for the future of New Zealand impressed me more than anything else, not only their extent, but the far-sightedness shown in them. Tho people of New Zealand are a live people, and judging from what they did in the World War they have started off to do something, and nothing is going to stor> them. We are leaving with ineffaceable memories of the kindness and courtesies in common with the hospitality of his Excellency and Viscountess Jellicoe. Their many kindnesses and courtesies, in common with the hospitality of your Government and people, call for more eloquence than the American Governor of Samoa commands.” Captain Pollock also acknowledged courtesies received from the naval authorities, remarking; “We were able to ask for anything we wanted, iust as though we had been part of the British Navy.” Farewell visits were paid to Captain Pollock by the Governor-General, the Mayor, and the chairman of the Harbour Board.
