NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN.

Only a few members were present at the annual meeting of the Dunedin branch of the National Council of Women, held on Wednesday. The secretary (Mrs Leech) presented the annual report, which showed that during the year four additional societies and three honorary members had affiliated. Expression was given to the indebtedness of the branch to the Hon. Mark Cohen, the Hon. 0. E. Stalliam, and Mr T. K. Sidey for their good offices and for advice regarding parliamentary matters affecting women and children; also to Mr Cailan for legal guidance in a great many legislative questions that had been considered by all the branches of the council. Among the subjects discussed were farm colonies for moral delinquents; women school inspectors*, .Socialist Sunday schools; women jurors, if there are before the court cases dealing with women and children, women J.P.’s. The president (Mrs Carmalt Jones) had expended much time and labour in drafting. a .new constitution to replace the present intricate and inconclusive one. The report was adopted. The balance sheet was submitted and passed. The income consisted solely of the fees paid by the representatives and honorary members. This amount barely meets the postage and stationery accounts. The office-bearers were then re-elected as follows :—President, Mrs Carmalt Jones; vicepresidents—Dr Siedeberg, Mrs T. K. Sidey. Miss P.unciman; hon. secretary and troasurer, Mrs Leech. The meeting authorised the remits that are to be sent from Dunedin to the conference to be held in Auckland in a few months’ lime.
