A pair of blue heron have been freqenting the seashore at Charteris Bay, Lyttelton Harbour, and have also been seen at Purau. These birds are very rare on the East Coast. They are protected by law, and a heavy penalty is provided on conviction of any person interfering with or injuring the birds.
