-r. u INVERCARGILL, May 11 Gnil,te the northern parts of New Zealand, Southland has been experiencing a spell of good weather, and the days have been fine, with a touch of frost at ni<-ht .. rivers registered a slight rise at the time of the Dunedin floods, but it was nothing to cause alarm.

An appeal was made to the Invercargill publ.c on Friday on behalf of the Barnard© Homes, and a good sum was collected on the streets. The day was fine, and the, workers were out early, and continued throughout the day at their self-imposed , The football matches last week were ivesnlji fought, and resulted in wins for Pirates, 'Star, and YY aikiwi, who played Invercargill, Afavist, and Bluff respectively The change of the half-holiday will make a difference to the teams; but Saturday will still be the big football day, as the clubs can put in stronger teams on that day. At a meeting of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce on Thursday Mr A. W. Morgan, the traflic manager, was present by invitation, and the present express - service was discussed. The chairman of the chamber, Mr A. le H. Hoyles, said that the present service was worse than the one running 20 years ago. In answer to the chamber, Mr Morgan said that the matter was beyond his control, but he would send any recommendations to tho head office for consideration. The chamber and the southland League are ma-kma strenuous endeavours to have the present service improved. Good weather favoured the field day held at Brown’s, and many farmers attended to listen to tho addresses given bv Mr R. B. Torment and Mr W. Alexander. Tho, addresses were in connection with the uses of lime on the farm, and in conjunction with Die lectures liny Brown’s Lime Kiln was thrown open, and many farmers inspected the works. The use of lime has increased during the past few years in Southland, and these lectures will assist to spread the knowledge of the beneficial

effects of lime upon the soil. The Power Board elections have now been completed, and the new board is as follows:—invercarg 11 Borough—Messrs J. Macalisfer (re-elected) and A. le H. Hoyles (new member) ; South Invercargill and Combined- District —Mr A. W. Rodger (new member for this particular district) ; Southland County—Messrs E. Bowmar, T. Fraser, and Hon. A. F. Hawke (re-elected), Messrs Adam Hamilton and IT. J. Middleton (new members); Wallace County— Messrs T. A. Buckingham (re-elected) and D. J. Hcenan (new member) ; Cluthn and T'uapeka Counties —Mr R. A. Rodger (reelected) ; Gore arid Combined District —Mr 11. E. Niven (re-elected). The old mem bers of the board who were not returned wore Messrs W. Hinchev (the late chairman) and L. Cody; while Messrs Henry Fowler, W. M. Norman, and A. Glass did not seek re-election. An instructive address was given to pouitrymen by Mr C. Oussen, Government expert, cn Thursday evening, when . no met tho members of the Invercargill Poultry Club and talked to them' upon tho methods of preparing birds for show purposes. He also dealt with the types required for the various breeds arid the good work being

accomplished by the utility sect.on cf the fancy. At- the conclusion he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his interesting lecture.

The Riverton Racing Club is considering adding to the stand accommodation at its course, and a special general meeting of the club was called to consider the matter. Recommendations for a new stand and for itmfroving the present structure were carried, and the committee was empowered to have plans cf each drawn up and submitted to a general meeting ior confi rm ation.

The County Council elections resulted as follows:

In the Wallace County Council elections the following were the successful candidates :—(Trepaki Riding, H. Garden; Mararoa, H. F. P.latch ; Aparima, W. T. James; Waiau, S. Fowle.

During the two years that Mr W. M’Ohesney occupied the Mayoral chair at South Invercargill many breezes occurred at the council table. It was expected that when Mr J. Mitchell, the new Mayor, took the chair that the meetings would be more orderly; but the new council, has already commenced to indulge in lively meetings. This dispute arose over an amended roll which, had not boon posted to the late Mayor, and some of the council got heated over the discussion. The new Mayor told those round the table that he would come down with a firm .hand ur-on any bickerings, but so far be had failed to c.-arry out his threat. Tbs annual meeting of the Invercargill Red Cross Society was held on Wednesday, Mrs J. A. Hanan being elected president. The society continued to care for those soldiers who are unfortunate enough to be still in hospital. A dental clinic for the care of children s tec-fch has been opened by the Soutnland Education Boil'd, and it is under the care of Misses Til. Needham and M. Kirkpatrick who arrived from Wellington during the week to take over the clime. The Inver Cargill children will receive first attention, and when that work is completed the nurses will visit the country schools in rotation. There is enough work in Invercarg l ' l to keep them fully employed for about 1U months. ~ The sequel to the utterances ol Mr L. Bowmar at Lumsden appeared m an apology over his name, in which he stated that during tho campaign he had mace unwarranted attacks upon Mr \V. Macalister, and that his statements were untrue. He unreservedly withdrew tne aliegain° tile annual renort of the Southland War Funds Association, presented for the annual meeting, it was stated that the funds still amounted to £50,(18, which was being used for the assistance of returned men. All the money has been invested, and is returning good interest. The association is doing good work, and the funds, although they appear large, are being used to the best advantage To clear up any misunderstanding that might have arisen throughout the Southland County with regard to Mr J. w hite s allegations, the Southland G'ouncil decided to ask for a special audit of its books foi the period questioned by Air Vvhite. The result of the Wallace Hospital Board election was as follows: -Thomas Anson Buckingham, 759 votes- Samuel Fow 705; Frederick James Dye'b boG Horrell C 59; Ilelisn Lobb Hunt, 623, Frederick James I.inscott 605; Jamas George Johnston, 692; Edward John Stevens, 575; Jane Craig Johnstone, 464. The first seven were elected.
