CANTERBURY COLLEGE.

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS CHRISTCHURCH, May 13. The official celebrations in connection with the jubilee of Canterbury College were commenced to-day, when delegates from other universities, graduates of the college, and undergraduates marched from the college to the cathedral. The numerical strength of the procession was between 700 and BCJ, and the spectacle was absolutely unique in the history of the city. The many-coloured hoods of dozens of universities made a vivid splash of colour in the cathedral, which was packed by a vast crowd. ... Archbishop Julius preached an inspiring sermon, in which he paid a tribute to the work of Canterbury College in the past, and made a pica for the recognition of instruction in religion by the university. Oxford and Cambridge, he said, were originally founded for the instruction of poor men who desired to enter the priesthood. In New Zealand these were the only men whom the university did not recognise.
