DUNEDIN WOOL SALES

KEEN COMPETITION. EXCELLENT PRICES REALISED. The second wool sale of the Dunedin series was opened in the Art Gallery Hall at 3 p.m. on the 31st. Notwithstanding the broken weather experienced in all parts of the province, which has retarded shearing operations to a very considerable extent, the catalogue to be offered this year is a good deal larger than it was at the corresponding sale last year. The total offerings at the present sale amount to about 25.000 bales, as compared with 18.497 bales at the second sale last season. A great deal of interest was manifested in the sale, the Art Gallery Hall being crowded with residents from both town and country. The bench of buyers was the largest yet seen at a sale in Dunedin, a number of faces being seen for the first time. English, Continental, American, Canadian, and Japanese firms were well represented, as were the New Zealand mills. The representatives of the last-mentioned were keen buyers of merino and fine crossbred wools. Only two catalogues—those of Messrs Stronaoh, Morris, and Co. (1900 bales) and the National Mortgage and Agency Company (3600 bales)—were disposed of on Wednesday. A feature of the proceedings was the remarkable keenness of the competition, practically every lot in the two catalogues offered being disposed of under the hammer. The record price on Thursday was received by Messrs Stronach, Morris, and Co. —291 d per lb for two bales of merino wool from Gladbrook. This figure constitutes a record price for New Zealand for the current season, and is probably the highest price ever secured in the dominion. PRICES WELL MAINTAINED. The second wool sale of the season was continued in the Art Gallery Hall on Thurs day, when the catalogues of six brokers were disposed of. The proceedings were started at 9 a.m., and were not finished until a very late hour, the total offerings amounting to 25,500 bales. The bench of buyers was the largest ever seen at any auction in the dominion —the ■eating accommodation being quite overtaxed. A considerable number of new faces were in evidence, the majority of them

coming -from Continental centres specially to attend this sale, which is recognised as perhaps the most important fixture in the roster of New Zealand auctions. 'ihe extra attention paid to valuing by buyers in the show rooms was very noticeaole, much more wool being pulled into the alleyways in the progress of examination than usual. The result of this was evidenced in the auction room by the spirited and continued competition throughout the whole of the catalogues submitted. Generally speaking, the condition of the wool available for this sale was of a high order. Ihe prices paid showed an appreciable improvement on the Dunedin December sales, and can be reported as being practically on a p-ar with recent auctions elsewhere, with the exception that buyers as usual work on higher limits in compet*u° r ,e I'ohter conditioned wools from the Otago province when offered in Dunedin. ihe following is the official range of prices:—

WORLD'S RECORD ESTABLISHED. llio prices realised at the wool sale—prices that Mr 11. A. Salmon, chairman of the W oolbrokers’ Association, told a Daily Tunes reporter constitute a record for Dunedin, and. in fact, for any of the world s markets so far as the grades of wool oflcied are concerned —have more than exceeded the wildest dreams of the producers and the brokers. Notwithstanding this, there was a tendency on the part of a few growers I?-!. their wool for still higher prices. hether or not the expectations will be realised is very uncertain, for, while na one appears to expect that wool will _how a material drop, “there is,” as a grower expressed it-, "a good deal of relief in knowing that the responsibility for the ga.nble has been passed on to someone else. * HALF A MILLION FOR OTAGO Perhaps the average citizen who scanned the report of the sale rather indifferently, feeling gratified that it had been successful, did not fully grasp what such a sale means to the province and the country as a whole apart from the producer in particular. The bales sold averaged £2O each, which means that over £500,000 —enough to conduct the affairs of the League of Nations for six months —has accrued to Otago through the disposal of what is now truly the golden fleeve. "Where is the money coming from?” may he asked. It should li? explained that Blrarlford practically controls the \v oo 1 market of America and Canada as well as of England, so that it was not very easy to tell what wool was being bought on behalf of the American Continent. But shrewd observers consider that the bulk of the English buyers’ purchases were on Itch alf of the U.S.A. and Canada. The one direct American buyer present, it may be mentioned, bought only about 10 bales. KNOWING MORE THAN THE BROKER. A small minority of the producers consider that it is safe to place a reserve of anything from a penny to twopence on the wool above the broker’s valuation. The reporter was told that a number of those people had been left with clips still on their hands. Will fortune smile or frown? Whatever the goddess does, those people will take the stand for good or ill with the others who elected to hold their clips back from the sale. A STRIKING COMPARISON. To those closely interested in the wool position there is food for thought that, synchronous with the Dunedin sale, there was a sale in London at which the prices were quoted as considerably lower than those realised locally. Taking the cost of transport and overhead charges into consideration, there is something that cannot be classed as altogether reassuring in this, even when the exchange eecentri uties are given their dye place in the problem. Appended is a comparison of the cabled London prices with those realised at Dun-

cent. ..._ 10 The comparison, of course, is not between high grade wools. WILL THE PUBLIC PAY? High prices for primary products generally mean prosperity for the people as a whole, but they also generally mean that the people as a w hole have to pay extra for their wants. When tue manager of a softgoods manufacturing concern was approached on Friday he said that there could be no doubt that the price of woollen goods would be raised. Some of the mills would raise them soon, some later, and others probably not this year. His own factory, as an example of the last class, had been quoting firm prices for the winter season, and had made several sales. Much depended on the supplies of wool held by the various factories, and be gathered that most of them had not kept their stocks up. It should be mentioned that the local mills were very heavy buyers at the Dunedin sale Messrs Donald Reid and Co. report:—We submitted a catalogue of 3395 bales. Our sale was held too late in the evening to allow of the publication of the results, some of which we now 7 append. Competition throughout our sale was very keen, with the result that 3320 bales were disposed of at highly satisfactory prices.
