DAMMING THE KAWARAU
APPLICATION BEFORE WARDEN’S COURT. HEARING ADJOURNED TO MARCH 8. ■From Our Own Correspondent.) QUEENSTOWN, February 3. Mr A. C. • Hanlon’s application for a license for a dam at Kawarau J-alls, the outlet of Lake Wakatipu, was adjourned to-day by the Warden, Mr G. Cruickshank, S.rvr., to sittings to be held on March 8. Formal objections had been lodged by the Public Works Department in the name .of his Majesty the King, the Cromwell Development Company, the Balclutha Borough Council, the Clutha River Board, the Southland .Hospital Board, and Mrs Ellen Cook I‘ e< V The latter was the only one supnorted by counsel. Mr lies, engineer, gave an outline of the scheme to dam the Kawarau, and stated that it was intended to collaborate with the Public Works Department regarding the kind of dam it would approve, also with the idea of making the dam and the proposed bridge across the Kawarau Falls, one and the same structure. In ordering an adjournment of the appli- ! cation, the Warden stated that he would communicate with the Public Works Departj ment stating what he had done, and recommending a conference with the engineer i for the syndicate regarding the kind of j dam that would be approved. When this ! was done plans could be prepared and endorsed with the approval of the Public i Works and Mines Departments when the : t application again came before him. Cer- ! tain conditions in the guarantee of the ■ . safety cf lives and property, and an indemnification against loss or damage to property, would have to be imposed before i it would be granted. i j Mr lies assured the court that the dam i it was proposed to erect would be perfectly : safe, and there would be no danger whatever of its breaking away under pressure ! of water.
