. During last season Mr R. Day, borough inspector at New Plymouth, planted some hundreds of pinus insignis trees at the Old W aterworks to smother gorse and blackberry. Reporting to the council, Mr Day said the trees had grown very well indeed. He had had the weeds cleared from around the trees, and did not think they would require further attention. “This has proved that the planting of trees is the only profitable way to deal with weeds. '
