Forward four, six, and eight-tooth wethers brought up to 28s 6d ; ordinary, 265; -forward two-tooth wethers, 29s 2d to 31s; ordinary, 26s 6d to 28s; good rape lambs, 23s 6d to 25s Id ; ordinary, 21s 6d to 23s 3d; small and inferior, 15s 6d to 21s; four, six, and eight-tooth ewes, 30s 6d to 36s 3d; sixtooth three-quarterbred ewes, to 37e; twotooth crossbred ewes, 28s 6d to 33s 6d; fail-ing-mouthed ewes, 20s to 27s 6d; low-con-ditioned and failing-mouthed ewes, 17s 3d to 19« 6d; aged ewes, 12s 6d to 17s. THE FRUIT AND PRODUCE WORLD Reilly’s Central • Produce Mart, Ltd., report : —During the week the volume of tomatoes, apricots, peaches, cucumbers, and vegetables arriving has been exceptionally heavy. Fruit or vegetables, carefully packed, graded, arriving in good condition, commend keen competition. Consignors of such can depend on good values. Those consigning scabby, mis-shapen, diseased, over-ripe, badly graded fruit, stale, overripe vegetables aTe always a source of trouble and worry to all concerned. Such produce should be left at home, and we would hear less of the lamenting and complaining about unpayable prices. This class of rubbish only kills the demand for good gTowers’ fruit and produce. Onions are easier. Poultry and eggs are meeting a good demand. Readers please note our quotations are for only produce of good quality. We sold: —Rhododendrons, 7s 6d to 12s 6d each. CANADIAN BUTTER AND CHEESE. Messrs J. Nathan and Co. (Welling-tota) report as follows under date January 20: Canada.—Date in December sales of butter were being made at auction around 38 cents per lb. Canadian exports of cheese for the season were 1,118,081 boxes against 1,369,791 boxes for last season. Prices ranged from 19 cents to 20 cents - There appears to be an impression in some quarters that from now on butter wbll be a better proposition than cheese. The butter position certainly appears sound, and there is apparently no reason t-o look foT any reduction in values. At the same time we still have great faith in the cheese position. Stocks in Canada at the close of the season were estimated to be about 20,000 to 30,900 boxes (each one cheese), practically a negligible quantity. It will be three months at least before Canadian is marketed in any appreciable quantities, and, as we have before pointed out, the high juices likely to prevail for butter may induce the Canadians to manufacture that’article. During the season just finished, Canada exported nearly four times the quantity of butter that she did the preceding season. The influence of this on the cheese position is obvious. CUSTOMS RETURNS. The Customs duties collected at Dunedin during January totalled £82,031 ss, and the beer duty amounted to £20,942 0s 6d. The figures for the corresponding month of last year were: Customs duties, £42,568 18s Id; beer duty, £18,617 10s 6d. DOMINION RUBBER COMPANY. The Dominion Rubber Company finds that, owing to the improvement in its financial position, due to the better market for its products, it is now decided by the directors to repay on the 31st inst the amount advanced by shareholders in April last year. THE NEW ZEALAND LOAN IN AUSTRALIA. Messrs J. B. Were and Son, of Melbourne, say in their market report of January 19: The ten years’ 5| per cent, tax free loan of tbe New Zealand Government has quickly filled up, the announcement that Victoria was now offering only 51 per cent, directing extra attention to the New Zealand issue. The loan was closed at 1 o’clock p.m. yesterday, the whole of the £500,000 asked for having been Over-snbscribed. As a matter of fact, a general recognition of a recent downward movement in interest rates caused special interest in this 5J per cent, giltedged investment, and about £300,000 was poured in during the last ten days or so.
