NEW PRAYER BOOK

HEATED CONTROVERSY EXPECTED. LONDON, January 24. The full text of the proposed revised Prayer Book for permissive use has been issued to members of the Church of England National Assembly, and will be debated at the Assembly next week. Heated debates are expected as High Churchmen contend that the proposals do not go far enough, while Low Churchmen believe they are revolutionary. The changes include the shortening ofthe Commandments, a prayer for the dead, and a form for the reservation at Open Communion of so much of the consecrated bread and wine as is necessary for the sick in the parish. The new prayers include one for the National Assembly for use at times of election, one for industrial peace, another for the universities, and a prayer for a dying child, the last being of singular beauty. The new Praver Book says: ‘A priest celebrating Communion shall be allowed to wear surplice, with stole or scarf and hood alternatively, white or plain, with vestment or cope.” There is also a proposed shortening of the morning and evening prayers.
