A TROUBLESOME SEAMAN
WELLINGTON, January 25. Richard Gill, a seaman, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court with assaulting Jas. Griffin, quartermaster on the Mararna. Complainant said he was guarding the gangway after the ship arrived yesterday, with instructions to permit nobody aboard. A notice to that effect was on the ship’s ride. A number of men congregated on the wharf in the morning, and when witness was leaving for lunch accused demanded admission as a citizen. He became aggressive, and pushed witness into two others, and a general fight followed, in which he was kicked and punched. Sub-inspector Oummings said accused was always trying to 3tir up trouble on the wharf, and during the recent dispute often . tried to prevent the employment of free labour. This was the third or fourth assault committed on vessels over labour questions. Aooused was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment.
