BROADCASTING REGULATIONS. FEES AND CHARGES. The licensing of installation, and the working of apparatus for radio telegraphy are the subject of comprehensive regulations published in the Gazette. For the purposes of the regulations, the mainland is divided into four radio districts, for the main centres—Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, Otago. Chatham Islands are included with Wellington, and Stewart Island with Otago. Western Samoa and Cook Islands are to be separate radio districts. Tbe district telegraph engineers will be tbe district radio instructors. Intending applicants for a liciense to erect or operate an amateur experimental or breadcasting station should, in the first instance, apply to the nearest district or deputy radio inspector, who will furnish any needed advice and supply forms of application. Applicants for license or operator’s certificate shall be required to furnish technical information, as required, together with statement of evidence of British nationality, reference to character, date, and place of birth, whether license is required on own behalf or for an association, and purposes of the proposed radio station. Where deemed necessary, the district inspector shall inspect the station, to determine whether, it meets the requirements of the regulations, prior to the granting of the license. The license shall indicate the power, wave-length, and types of transmission authorised, and shall remain in operation for 12 months. The holder of an amateur operator’s certificate shall be required to maintain his proficiency in the subjects covered by the certificate, which may be revoked or suspended at tbe discretion of the Minister. FEES AND CHARGES. The annual fees to be paid in respect of licenses issued by the Minister for the installation and operation of any class of radio station shall be as follow: (1) An amateur station for reception

26. The fee to be paid in respect of a duplicate of an amateur operator’s certificate or of a radio station license shall be 6s. CASES OF EMERGENCY. Special regulations apply to secrecy. The transmission is prohibited of any communications of a seditious, profane, obscene, libellous, or offensive nature; oommunioations of false or mis’eading character and false S.O.S. messages are also prohibited. The Government reserves the right to take over the station in case of emergency. Interference with other radio stations, and particularly with Government and coast ship stations, must be avoided. A log must be kept, showing the number of hours the apparatus is in operation, and recording the reception of any special signals. No limitations shall be prescribed regarding the type or dimensions of transmitting plant, provided the regulations are observed, and no interference is caused to other stations. The same rules apply to receiving plants. BROADCASTING PLANTS. Broadcasting stations shall be classified into those which make no charge for broadcasting and toll stations. Tbe normal power of a broadcasting station shall be half a kilowatt, and the wave-lengths of transmission shall vary from 190 metres at Westport to 385 at New Plymouth. On Sundays priority will be given to religious broadcasting. Special regulations are drawn up to deal with experimental transmitting stations, the normal power of which shall be 50 watts. Contravention of the regulations renders offenders liable to a fine of £SO or imprisonment for six months.
