DRAUGHTS.

Black.

CONDUCTED BY JOS. ABEBNETHY.

Solutions of problems, games, and analyses rtted lor this column. Games should be written In six columns as below, and all correspondent addressed to tbe Draughts Editor.

PROBLEM 5723. By Alex. Shepherd, Waimate,

White. White to play and win. The above is formed by 25th move in Game 5777, played between Messrs .J. A. Boreham (black) and R. Botting, which ran to a neat draw. Criticism is invited.

PROBLEM 5724. By O. H. Richmond, Michigan, U.S.A

Black.

White. Black to play; White to won. This little beauty was originally published with the motto “I should smile.”

TO CORRESPONDENTS. “A. 5.,” Waimate. —Thanks for problem You are correct in solution to Problem 5721. “T. L. W.,” Moerewa. —Just in time to acknowledge—solutions next week. Magazine very welcome, and your offer much appreciated. Have not seen the journal for a year or two. “Anxious.”—The World's Championship games will not be out until March. We expect to have a few copies for sale. Book should arrive here early in April or end of March. GAMES. Played between Messrs J. A. Lucas and H. Morris in the preliminary all-round section of the 1922 Australasian championship at Dunedin. Game 5785—“ Denny.”

(a) Not a common line, but apparently safe enough. (b) “The Modern Handbook” gives a For-syth-Fairbrace game which should be noted by the student. It continues 24 20, 16 19, 27 24, 7 10-c, 32 27, 5 9, 26 16, 3 7 , 24 2C, 1 5, 16 11, 7 16, 20 11, 12 16, 27 23, 8 12, 22 17, 13 22, 26 17, 19 26, 31 22, 10 19, 17 1, and White wins neatly. (c) This is evidently the loser; 7 11 should draw. Game 5786 —“Denny.” Lucas’s move.

The score-sheet now has four moves which cannot be played. The “Black wins. ' We fancy White threw' his game away by 13 9, 5 14, 15 18, 14 17, 21 14, 26 31. Played in the same tournament as above between Messrs J. A. Boreham (Dnnedin) and J. Bruce (New Plymouth). Game 5787—“Ke150.” Boreham’s move.

(a) Not a common continuation; 21 17 or 26 22 is more general. (b) A natural-looking move, but it gives Black a strangle-liold from which there is no escape. White seems quite safe with 17 13, 18 27, 13 6, etc. (c) Settles the question.

(c) Fata], overlooking 31 27, and illustrating the need for great care in an ending. Black had his draw by 9 13. NOTES AND CRITICISMS. Mr T. L. Woods, Moerewa, writes os follows on Game 5772—“ Edinburgh,” played between Messrs J. Bruce (black) and X. D. Lowry:—The position at 32nd move is as follows:

SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS. Problem 5717 (by A. Shepherd).—Black on 1,3, 11, 23, King 25. White on 10, 12, 13, 20, 21, 31. White to play, what result?

(c) 11 7, 22 18, etc. Drawn. [We shall be pleased to receive criticism on the foregoing.—Ed. O.W.] Problem 5718 (by J. Abernetliy.—Black on 1,3, 23, King 22. White on 8, 10, 12, 21, 27, King 2. Black to play and win.

(a) The learner will observe this prevents White going to release the white man on 21. (b) This gives White “the move.” (c) But Black proceeds to regain “the move” and win.
