CANTERBURY DOINGS.

By OnsEavEß. The Ricearton tracks have worn a deserted appearance during the past week, owing to die absence of about thirty of our horses at Trent ham. Their performances At the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting

were followed with great interest, but the | results were very disappointing, the only winners from this quarter being Petunia and Veil. Local backers experienced a disastrous time, as several of the Hiocarfon contingent were strongly supported, but raced a long way below expectations. Veil broke a blood vessel on the final day at Trentham, and sho has gone to the Koatanui Stud, where she was bred, her future career being in the matrons' paddock. She was a promising youngster, but she has never fulfilled her early promise. Uupidon showed good form at Trentham without ever quite looking like a winner. He may land a stake at one of the autumn meetings. Deucalion contracted a cold at Trenuiam, and was not able to start after the Wellington Cup. Pilliewinkie was heavily supported for the Duro Cup at Trentham, but had to put up with third place. He is a very useful hack, and is sure to win soon. Winning Ilit raced badly in his only engagement at Trentham, and appears to have gone off. Palestrina oould not be started on the first and second days at Trentham on account of heel troubles, and she made a poor show in the Consolation Handicap. She may do a lot better in races ahead. Scrimmage showed useful form at Trentham, and sho only requires a little luck to land a stake, as she is very well. Her stablemate, Angelo, may also pay for following during the balance of this season. Pluto and Vespucci ran much below expectations in their Trentham engagements. Wink can muster up a good burst of speed, but judged on her lrenlham running she cannot stay. Valdamo looked a promising sort at one stage of his career, but I am afraid be is never going to be more than a moderate. Sunny Loch cost, his connections a lot of money at Trentham. On the opening day he looked a winner at the distance, but tailed to run on, while on the second day he never got near the front at any stage. The two-year-old filly Top Score was unable to fulfil her engagement on the last aay at Trentham owing to jarring a toot very badly. The Summer meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club will be held next Saturday, and present indications suggest that it will be more than usually successtul. The Middle Park Plate, one of the oldest races run at Riccartori, will figure on the programme for the last time. It will attract a fair field. Murihaupo is easily the best performed hors# engaged, but he will have to concede a lot of weight to Wild Hind, whose North Island form makes her appear at least useful. The fields for all the handicap events will be large, and of better quality tnan usual. Most of our own best horses are engaged, and we are expecting a few North Island horses to compete, so the sport should be above the average. Boadicea, did not go to Trentham, but she is well, and likely to win a race very soon. Mr W. R. Kemball will have several horses racing at Ricearton on Saturday, after which they will go on to Wingatui. His team arrived her on Saturday. It consists of Insurrection (purchased at Trentham from J. W. Lowe), Trespass, Bumptious, Avonlea, Kilris, and Conflict. Mr W 7. T. Hazlett’s tw r o fillies, Gold Light and Razzle Dazzle, arrived her from Wellington on Saturday. They will stay for a few days’ rest and will then go to Wingatui. The ex-Australian trotting trainer J. J. Kennerly, will leave shortly for Melbourne to get some more horses for his team. Kennerly has done well during his stay here, and he intends to settle permanently in Canterbury. When Foo Chow broke down in Auckland his case was so bad that he could not be brought home. His owner, Mr J. S. Barrett, has received word that the Solferino gelding is making very slow progress, and he will not be fit to ship south for another month. There will be a very big exodus of horses and their followers this week for the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting. The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club has received a fine list for (he February meeting, to be held on Saturday of next week. The only small field will be The Juvenile Handicap, for three-year-odds, but the prospect of seeing Logan Chief, Acron, Ahuriri, and Bonny Logan in action will make it the event of the meeting. Incidents arising out of the Waiau Racing Club’s meeting on January 5 were discussed at a special meeting of the Canterbury District Committee last week. The Flying Handicap was won by Bomb, with Helaze second, but after the race the stewards of the Wairau Racing Club held an inquiry, as a result of which they decided to reverse the positions, placing Helaze first and Bomb second. This decision was arrived at for the reason that W. H. Bush, the rider of Bomb, was held to be guilty of malpractice and interference. Bush was also suspended till July 31. Against this decision Rush appealed. After a lengthy inquiry the Conlerbury District Committee decided that, the evidence was not sufficient to upset the decision of the Waiau stewards, and the appeal was dismissed. Mr J. O’Oarroll, the owner of Bomb, also appealed against the decision of the Waiau stewards in awarding first place to Helaze and claiming the stakes. After some discussion the further hearing of this case was adjourned. WELLINGTON NOTES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) January 25. The Wellington'Cup meeting passed off all right, although it would have been much better bad the weather been fine on the holiday (Anniversary Day). The feature of the meeting was the success of the Kilbroney filly Razzle Dazzlo, who won on each of Ihe three days, and paid a great price when she cleaned up Glentruin, Tamat.ete, and Co. in the weight-forage race. Gold Light, also won on her only appearance, and Air W. T. Hazlett easily headed the list of owners. The veteran trainer Stuart Waddell leaves for the south to-mor-row, so that Otago sports will see the two daughters of Simper in action at Wingatui. On the whole the Otago contingent aid not do so bad when you reckon that only one Trentham-trained horse could win a race. It was thought that Silver Peak was unlucky to get beaten by Merrie Day in the big race on the second day. She won on the last day, and her backers had an anxious ten minutes. Just after passing the post Silver Peak collided with the horse ridden by the clerk of the course, and F. E. Jones had to be carried in to the scales. M‘Mahour carried in the gear, and Jones

managed to draw the weight. Wheatfield and Trespass also came down. Kerb and Songbird ran second and third in sprint event on the second day. Four of tho Merry Moment breed won on the second day, three of thorn carrying the tartan jacket of Mr H. M. Campbell, the Hawke’s Bay owner. Mr W. R. Kemball saved trainer J. W. Lowe the trouble of taking Insurrection to the other side to sell him. It is stated the price paid ran in to four figures. Helen Rufus ran two firsts and two thirds at Foxton and won on the concluding day at Trentham, a pretty good performance in four days. Printemps also ran second in the Diamond Jubilee Cup at Foxton and -was similarly placed in the Consolation at Trentham. AUCKLAND^TOPICS. [By Digoeb.l Alfort was the only Ellerslie-trained horse competing at Wellington, a second and third place being his share of the stake money. During the past few weeks the Australianbred gelding has run second on three occasions. The Waikato-owned Glencairn showed good form at the meeting. The son of Glen Albyn is credited with being a good jumper, and may l>e seen to advantage over hurdles later on. The victories of Razzle Dazzle and Gold Light were well received locally. The trainer of the pair, Mr S. Waddell, is very popular at Ellerslie. Viyella has come on a lot lately, and stays on well in her work. A race extending over a mile should not be beyond her. Sir Pam has rejoined the active brigade at Ellerslie. The two-year-old son of Panmure is likely to be useful later on. Mr J. Kemp’s two-year-old Prince Papa (Prince Merriwee—Te Papapa) show* a bit of pace on the track, and with a little more experience may be useful. Geoffrey Is not being hurried in his work, but should be in good form for liis autumn engagements. The imported colts Musketoon and Knighthood are coming on nicely. The former used to be a bit troublesome, getting rid of his rider on several occasions, but has settled down now and does his work well. Sy corax is on the easy list at present. She has been a disappointment since coming north, but may do becter later on in the season. Shortland is hitting out well in his work, and should soon be ready to race. The Mountain Knight gelding is fairly smart. Dancing Doll continues to shape well in her work, but so far the imported filly has been very costly to her supporters. She mav race better in the autumn. Canyon, who recently joined Mr J. Williamson’s stable, shaped very well over ha£f a mile on Tuesday morning. The daughter of Wolawa should pay her way in this district. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. Second Day.—Monday, January 22. Showery weather prevailed for the second day of the Wellington Racing Club’s summer carnival. The attendance was large and the course was heavy. The racing was of an interesting nature. The Racing Club Handicap provided keen speculation, with Merry Day favourite. Silver Peak, Paoanui, and Roseday made the most pace in the early stages, but at the business end Merry Day, who was always well placed, took charge. She had to suffer a hot challenge from Silver Peak, but won well by half a length, with Scrimmage fairly close up, then came Kick Off and Sunart. In the Metropolitan Handicap the field was fairly well bunched coming into the straight. At the distanee Songbird forged ahead, but Kerb came with a late run and won by two lengths, with Aslinome and Kinsem next. The Douro Cup was won very decisively by Diamond Ring, from Glencairn. Pilliewinkie was next. The totalisator takings amounted to £63,699 10s, compared with £76,698 last Anniversary Day. Results: MUNGAROA HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, Of 350sovs. One mile and a-quarter. INCONSISTENT RUNNING. TROTTING CONFERENCE DISCUSSION. WELLINGTON, January 24. At the special meeting of the Trotting Conference, held here yesterday, Mr James Rowe asked the president, who occupied the chair, for a ruling on the question of inconsistent running. The evil, Mr Rowe said was very prevalent, horses sometimes displaying very different form on successive days, but the officials were very reluctant to deal with it in view of the decision of the Racing Conference to the effect that complaints must be made on the day of the alleged offence. ' This meant that no proceedings could be taken if a horse performed very badly on one occasion, and then under precisely similar circumstances ran very well in another event, when there was an interval of only 24 hours between the two performances. Mr Rowe recognised that trotting was governed by the rules of trotting—not by the rules of racing, but an opinion of this kind, expressed by the president of the Racing Conference, naturally carried great weight, and it seemed desirable that the president of the Trotting Conference should elucidate the matter for the benefit of the affiliated clubs. After a number of other delegates had spoken on the subject, all assuming that Sir George Clifford had given the ruling attributed to him, Mr Nicol (the president) said he did not want to traverse the opinion expressed by the president of the Racing Conference, which, of course, was based on the rules of racing, but his own view was that the rules of trotting provided ample machinery for dealing with cases of inconsistent running, and that officials need- have no hesitation in putting it into operation. Having had the statement made at the meeting of the Trotting Conference roughly outlined to him this morning, .Sir George Clifford expressed profound astonishment that anyone had been deluded into believing that he had given such a ruling as the one which apparently had been attributed to him. He said he never had been asked to give a ruling on the subject, and he never had expressed one. Probably in bis addresses to the Racing Conference he had referred to inconsistent running and similar evils lots of times, and to the best of his ability he had laboured with the other members of the conference to devise means for their prevention, but he was sure nothing he had said or done could be reasonably construed into an admission that the rules of racing made no effective provision for the punishment of inconsistent running. He understood that one of the delegates at the Trotting Conference had stated that the rules of racing made no provision for the punishment of this offence. He would not attempt to instruct this gentleman on the phrasing and purport of the rules, but he would be glad if he and his colleagues would look at the section devoted to corrupt and fraudulent practices, and let him know how it might be enlarged and amended to make just punishment more swift or more certain. But liis purpose at the moment was to state most emphatically that he had never given officially or unofficially such a ruling as the one attributed to him, and that he did not believe the rules were ineffective against people responsible for inconsistent running. He was sure his friend Mr Rowe w'ould be courteous enough to let him know how lie came by his wrong impression.
