AMATEUR ATHLETICS

OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. The Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Centre was certainly unfortunate in the weather it encountered for the championship contest© on Saturday. So threatening were th© conditions in the morning that a meeting of officials was held to consider whether th© meeting should not be postponed. An almost continuous drizzling rain was falling, and any idea of a satisfactory attendance could not be entertained for a moment. But there were other things to be considered, and not -the least weighty of the reasons that determined the promoters not to postpone the gathering was the fact that a team from Invercargill wa3 present and it was almost certain that the members would not be able to make the journey again. At is was, the weather lifted somewhat, and only a little very light rain fell during the afternoon. The ground, however, was damp for spectators, and the going was heavy. This was to be regretted, as the form shown by several competitors led to the belief that one or two records might have been lowered under more favourable conditions. The visiting pedestrians acquitted themselves very well,, the result being that Invercargill ran a very respectable second to University for the championship banner, Anglican being a good third. The banner was awarded on points—3, 2, and 1 respectively for first, second, and third, points to be divided in case of a dead heat, and the totals were: University, 33i; Invercargill, 264; Anglican, 23; Pacific, 11; Caversham, 8; Artillery, 5. The Reid Cup was awarded to the competitor gaining most points in the championship events, the counting being, as in the championship contest, by 3,2, and 1. Morgan (Invercargill) won the cup with four firsts—l2 points. 'Harrington (Invercargill) was second, with one first and three seconds —9 points—while Lethaby (Anglican) was third, with one win, one second, and three thirds—B points. Patterson (University) and Aitken (University) came next, with 7 points each. Morgan won most of his events with something to spare, and, ijoesibly, had ho been seriously pushed, might have cut off something; from tli© times recorded. The management was all that could be desired, th© various events being run off well to

time, and there was nothing in th© proceedings to mar the pleasure of the spectatoi® The following officials supervised the arrangements:— Referee, Mr E. A. Kosevear; superintendent. Mr P. W.
