THE RHODES SCHOLARS
THE ACADEMIC YEAR 1921-22. EXAMINATION RESULTS. (From Oub Own Correspondent.) LONDON December 7. Five names of New Zealand interest appear in the list of successful Rhodes scholars for the academic year, 1921-22. They are Messrs A. O. Ponder, W. M. Jones, K. Sisam, K. 11. Bailey, and J. L. Hagen. During the year 72 Scholars took up their scholarships for the first time. The number actually in residence for either the whole or some part of the academic year was 300 —156 from the British Empire ami 144 from the United States of America. These scholars were distributed among the various subjects as fellows: —Literae Hunianiores (including Philosophy or kindred subjects, pursued with a view to advanced degrees), 12; . Mathematics, 5; Natural Science (including Medicine), 66; Law, 98; Modern History, 40; Theology, 18; Modern Languages, 3; English Literature, 17. Oriental Language, 1; The Honour School .of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, -7; .Economics (Diploma, B.Litt._ or D.Phil.),-• 13-; Agriculture. 3; Forestry, 5; Education, 6 Anthropology, 1; Pass Degree, !•; Miscellaneous Reading, 5. There were also- in residence for one or more terms nine ex-scholars. -In the course of the yfeaf 87 scholars either completed the term'of‘the Scholarship' went out of residence without completing it. The academic year T922-23’'starts with 262 Rhodes Scholars in residence. In addition, there will be in residence seven ex-scholars. EXAMINATION RESULTS. The following Academic Distinctions at Oxford were gained:—F. 0. Flint (Oregon. 1919), Chancellor’s Prize for an English Essay; J. F. Mills (Jamaica, 1919), Theodore Williams "Scholarship in Pathology; J. A. W eir (Saskatchewan, 1914), Scholarship for tlie Promotion of Legal Studies; H. 1,. Brose (South Australia, 1913), Lecturer for the Wykeham Professor of Physics in Trinity Term; W. M. Jones (New Zealand), Wykeham Professor of Physics; A. 0. Ponder (New Zealand, 1917), Lecturer in Chemistry at Balliol College; T. S. Wilder (U.S.A., 1919), Demonstrator for tlie Professor of Pharmacology in Hilary Term; C. A. W. Manning (Rondebosch, 1914), Senior Hulnre Scholarship at Brasenose College; R. P. Hamilton (U.S.A., 1919), Boulter Law Exhibition at Christ Church (halved); T. K. Penniman (Vermont, 1917), Commoners’ Kxhibition in Literae Humaniores at Trinity College; R. M. Carson (Michigan, 1918), President of the Oxford Union Society for the Summer Term. In the course of the year Messrs K. 11. Bailey, W. M. Jones, J. L. Hagen, and A. 0. Ponder proceeded to the degree of B. while Messrs Jones and Ponder were admitted to read for Advanced Degrees in Natural Science. Publications of tlie year included “Fourteenth Century Verse and Prose, - ’ edited by K. Sisam (Auckland). K. H. Bailey, who is an Australian Rhodes Scholar, was born in Canterbury and had his early education in New Zealand. J; L. Hagen, who was awagded tlie degree of 8.C.L., eame from West Virginia in 1918 as a Rhodes Scholar, but he really belongs to Napier. Having taken his final Bar examination, in 1921, he was appointed Law Lecturer at Leeds University. His parents now reside in British Columbia. On the athletic side the only name given of New Zealand interest is W M. Jones, who lias been a prominent member of the University hockey team. The report notes the death of Sir George Parkin, to whom the scholarship system, and, indeed, the whole Empire, owes a deep debt of gratitude for a long life of devoted work. He died almost in harness within a week of making his last speech to a great gathering of scholars.
