A MURDEROUS ASSAULT.
VICTIM STILL LINGERING. WAIPAWA, January 17. At the adjourned inquest on the body of Puhi Maiha. who murderously assaulted his wife on January 2 and afterwards shot himself, a verdict was returned that death was caused by a gunshot wound self-in-flicted. The evidence showed that deceased pleaded with his wife not to go away with another Native, but his attitude to the woman suddenly turned from pleading into rage, and Maiha struck her violently with a hammer on the head. He afterwards secured a gun and shot the top of his head away. Mrs Maiha is still lingering, but in a very low condition.
