BANKRUPTCY RETURNS

The official bankruptcy returns for the Otago and Southland districts for last year as furnished by Mr W. W. Samson (Official Assignee) and the Deputy-Assistant Assignees at Invercargill and Oamaru show that the number of bankruptcies totalled 43, as against 30 for 1921. Of this number Otago accounted for 13. The number of farmer bankrupts was 18, as against 12 for the previous year. Labourers numbered three (two last year), salesmen two (none last year), storekeepers three (one last year), contractors two (one last year), and clerks two (none last year) Other bankrupts were of various occupations, including one hotelkeeper, a kinematograph operator, an accountant, and a stationer. The returns are as follow, the figures in parentheses being those for 1921: OTAGO.
