A LAND AGENT’S LICENSE
DISCHARGED BANKRUPT’S APPLICATION. CHRISTCHURCH, January 15. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, before Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M., Joseph Hamlet made an application for a land agent’s license, an objection against its issue being raised by the Land Agents’ Association. The Magistrate said that a report had been received from the Land Agents’ Association which expressed the opinion that it was too soon after Hamlet’s discharge from bankruptcy for him to obtain a license. Counsel for Hamlet admitted that there were some unusual features about the application, but Hamlet’s bankruptcy was caused through a slump in the motor trade. That his bankruptcy was unavoidable was shown by the fact that a discharge was granted in less than two months from the date of the petition. In reply to the objection of the Land Agents’ Association he produced certificates of character and fitness for business from seven well-known men. The Magistrate said that he was required to see that the applicant was financially able to carry an business. Counsel said that Hamlet was guaranteed by the Bank of Australasia for £ISOO. After the bant (s certificate had been produced the license was granted.
