THE FRENCH MISSION

ARRIVAL IN AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND. January 16. Hie Jules Michelet, with the French Mission aboard, arrived this morning. A series of official welcomes was later carr'e|l °ut. Commander Hotham tendered the first on behalf of the naval squadron. This was followed by Admiral Gilly visiting the Governor-General at 10 o’clock, and Viscount Jellicoe returning the call an hour later. The Hon. C. J. Parr represented the Government in an official call at 11.30, Mr M’Kenzie (chairman of the Harbour Board) and Mr Guneon (Mayor) following. Admiral Gillv returned the calls this afternoon. A civio reception v.as accorded Admiral Hilly, lus officers, and members of the French mission. The Hon. C. J. Parr, who represented the Government, dwelt in an interesting manner on the important part the French played in the early life of New Zealand. In responding, Admiral Gilly spoke of his pleasure in visiting the dominion, saying: “France will ever revere the memory of the Anzacs and the gallant deeds of those of your dead who lie at rest beneath our soil. It is a friendship forged in the fires of adversity and sealed with the blood of the dead. I_ am very glad to have an opportunity of visiting you. and am proud to bo charged with bringing you the greetings of all the people of France.” He trusted that the mission would draw closer the bonds of trade relationship and cement the friendly bonds already established. In the evening a citizens’ “At Home” was held in honour of the visitors. One of the most attractive features about the Jules Michelet denotes the purpose of its cruise in the South Pacific. This is a fine photographic exhibit of many of the most beautiful manufactures of France. It is contained in a panelled showcase, and comprises about 300 coloured photographs illustrative of a very comprehensive range of French goods, including an exquisite case of tapestry, jew-ellerv. lingerie, and dainty fabrications de Francaisc. This salon has commanded admiration at exhibitions in Paris, New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia.
