Lycopodium (says an exchange) as well as fuchsia is something of a botanical curiosity, for it is only of recent years that its life history has been unearthed by the Rev. J. E. Holloway, of Hokitika, who found that it has a stage when it lives in the ground in the form of tiny tubers, like badly shaped potatoes. The nearest relatives of the lycopodium and the club mosses generally, according to Dr Cockayne, are plants of long ago, which were the ancestors of seed plants, so that lycopodium is a survival of a very dim age, and probably was old and lonely when the fuchsia first arrived from South America.
