OBITUARY.

MR A. E. G. RHODES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, December 26. Mr A. E. G. Rhodes, who had been suffering from heart trouble for a considerable time, died this morning at his residence “Tekoraha,” Merivale. He was born in 1859 and was the third son of the late Mr George Rhodes, of ' Level's Estate. Timaru, one of Canterbury s earliest pioneers. He was educated at Christ's College, Christchurch, and at Jesus College, Cambridge, England, where he graduated as a R.A. and LL.B. in 1880. In 1882 he was called to the bar in the Inner Temple, and in the same year returned to New Zealand and began a practice in Christchurch. Mr Rhodes was a sound lawyer, and his opinions in financial matters were based on a thorough understanding of finance. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1887, when he represented Gladstone, and three years later he was elected for Geraldine, practically the same seat under another name. In the general elections of 1893 arid 1896 he contested the Pareo.ra seat unsuccessfully and subsequently was defeated for Avon Mr Rhodes was elected Mayor of Christchurch in 1901 and welcomed to Christ church the present King and'Queen. ‘‘Tekoraha.. his beautiful residence in Menvale was occupied bv their Royal Highnesses during their vi=it to Christchurch. Mr Rhodes always took a keen interest in public affairs, tor several years he was a director of the New Zealand Shipping Company, Ltd., and in 1917 he was elected chairman of directors, a position he held until early this year. He was president of the Canterbury A and 1. Association in 1894. and president of the Canterbury Automobile Association. tie was a director and for some tune chairman of the directors of the Christchurch Press Company. Ltd., and a director of the Waihi Goldmining Company. During the war Mr Rhodes was actively connected with Red Cross work and received the Order of the British Empire. He. was also keenly interested in sport. He was for a time president of the Canterbury Rugby Union and also of the Christchurch Polo Club In 1892. Mr Rhodes married Miss Rose Moorhouse. daughter of the late Mr J. W. Moorhouse. He is survived by Mrs Rhodes and leaves one son. Captain Tahu Rhodes, M.V.O. '(Who married the Hon. Helen PJuxiket. eldest daughter of the late Lord Plunket one time Governor of New Zealand;, and one daughter, who is married to Major G. F. Hutton, D. 5.0., of Bangor Hawkins. MR ALEX. DICKIE, MATAURA. * One' of the oldest and most respected residents of Mataura passed away on Wednesday. in the person of the late Mr Alex. Dickie who was born at Ga,inhill, Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1842. He came to New Zealand 63 years ago m the sailing ship. Robert Henderson, landing .at 1 ort Ghatmers, and after working for Mr Pearson Taieri for 12 months, he joined the gold., rush to Gabriel’s Gully. He afterwards joined a survey party at Invercargill, where he remained until his father and family came out to hew Zealand. He walkec. from Invercargill to Dunedin to meet his people, who landed in 1863. In company with his late brother, Robert Dickie, and Mr Matthew Dickie, after working at Clifton and Cartarhope Station, he built a house as Kaihiku, known as Kyburn in 1866. The deceased took up the farm.! Glen Eden, at. Tuturau, where he resided till his death.. He was looked upon as , one of the best farmers in the district, and brought Glen Eden to a high state of cultivation. He took an active part in local affairs, and was a member of the Tuturau Road Board and the Tutuwiu School Committee, acting as chairman for a number of years to both bodies; also he was a director of both the Mataura and Tuturau Dairy Factories, nil active member of Gore Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and the Presbyterian Church atTuturau. The deceased is survived by his widow and three sons and six daughters. a« follows Messrs David (Croydon). Richard and James (Aparima). John Milne (East Gore) William and Robert (Tuturau). Mesdames John Smith (W.yndham). Henry Allan (Gore). Misses Mary and Jane Dickie (Tuturau). The funeral took place at the Mataura Cemetery, there beinqr a very large following- the Rev. J. M'Mastcr. 8.A., officiating at a very impressive service.
