WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council, held on Friday, was attended by Crs Briscoe (chairman), Overton, Gilmore, M’Laehlan, and M'Gill. INSPECTOR'S REPORT. The Inspector reported that in the Ilawksbury Riding tile El Dorado bridge had been repaired, the ford raised with gravel, and a few loads of gravel spread on the road. Surfacing work had been done on several parts of the road between Mount Watkins and Swampy Hill. Tile bridge at the island had been tarred. The gravel on Flag Swamp road had been raked in and the water tables on this and Hosie’s riaid were cleared out during the month. Gravel was being spread oil Bothnne’s road, and the cuttings cleaned out. In the Merton Riding repairs had bepn made to the bridge at M‘Gillivray’s road. The bridge was partly redecked, but 420 ft of planks was needed to complete the work. About 24 yards of rotten rock was needed to put this road in good order. Potholes near .the top’ of Kilmog bad been filled in. and (he slip near Dodds’s attended to. Nineinch pipes were required to replace an old culvert- on the road at Omimi, and 6in pipes for a new culvert at the top of Cuthill’s road. In the Blueskin Riding new beams and decking bad been put, on the bridge on the main load near Waitati School and the work of widening the bends on the main road was finished. A few yards of tlie stone quarried at Reger’s bend had been broken and spread in the hollow. The remainder of Hayward’s Point road was surfaced and potholes in the main road attended to. The walls on the Lower Harbour road were being repaired, slips cleared, and ditches cleaned out. A new fence erected by Mr Thomson bad narrowed the Murdering Beach load bv 3ft in some places. Reporting in connection with the NorthEast Valley Riding, the Inspector stated that very little progress had been made with the metal contract at Mount Cargill during tho month. Tlie most, of the metal broken had been spread and blinded. Watortqliles were cleaned out on this road and on Reservoir road, and the new metal raked in on the latter. ‘the renort was adopted, authority for works indicated in the report being given. The Inspector was instructed to have the fence erected by Mr Thomson moved back clear of the road. CORRESPONDENCE. Tlie Prime Minister advised that he had taken noie of the proposal by the Ashley County Council, which had been supported by the Waikouaiti County Council, that onethird of the annual hospital levy should be calculated on the population and the rest oil the capital value of contributing districts. Isaac Stevenson, Mount Royal, wrote that 12 months ago he had received permission to allow gates to remain on roads going through his property. He had neglected to paint ‘‘public road’’ upon the gales, and they were thrown to one side by someone. He asked that he be given permission to reerect tho gates.—lt was decided to take no action. Three ratepayers of Long Beach drew attention to the bad state of the Long Beach road.- -To lie attended to. A. E. Anderson, Princes strert. Dunedin, requested that the road fronting his mother’s property at Warrington be repaired.— Referred to the Inspector. The Ranker reported that 73 head of cattle had been found wandering.—Adopted amidst expressions of astonishment. It was decided to endorse the action, of the chairman and Cr Gilmore in inspecting a piece of land at Evansdale for use as a pound.—The chairman and tlie same member were empowered to take the necessary steps to lease the property from Gihnore Bros.
