RACING DRAMA.

JOCKEY’S BAD LUCK. LONDON, October 19. Turf romances, fictional and otherwise, were eclipsed by a dramatic anti-climax in the result of the I’rix du Conseil, a municipal race, at Longchamps, worth normally £BOOO. A horse called The Dauphin, owned by Jefferson Cohn, one of the most prominent owners on the French turf, ran away with the race, and when the jockey, Sharpe, weighed in he was astonished to find that he was under weight. His bridle was dung in to adjust the discrepancy, which action is permissible under French racing rules, but was not sufficient. It appears that after weighing out Dauphin’s girth broke, and it was not suspected that the substitute girth wiis a few ounces lighter. As the horses went to the post tiharpe failed to weigh out again. After the discovery that the jockey was under weight, The Dauphin was disqualified, to the stupefaction of the crowd, and the race was awarded to la? Prodige. The betting figures at Longchamps were remarkable, the pari-mutuel showing 2. 000. 000 francs invested on the T’rix du Conseil alone, and 8,000,000 francs during the afternoon.
