MAIN ROADS BILL.

WELLINGTON, July 14. A statement on his intentions with regard to tlie Main Roads Bill was made by the Hon. J. G. Coates (Minister of Public W orks) in the House this afternoon. The member for Awarua (Mr J. R. Hamilton) asked the Minister 'whether a Alain Roads Bill was to be brought down this year, and if so whether county councils and other bodies interested would be given an opportunity cf discussing it before it came before the House. The Minister said that a rough draft of the memorandum he had promised to circulate among the bodies which took part in the recent High Ways conference had been prepared. There would be a Counties Conference this year, and no doubt the memorandum would be discussed there, lie thought considerable progress had been made towards what was aimed at. and he was hopeful of submitting to the House something that would at any rate be the basis of a solution of the main roads problem. Sir John Luke: Are yon holding on to the tyre tax in the meantime for the fund? The Minister: Most assuredly. It is still there and 1 hope it will lie there till we come to a solution.
