In the month of July, 1845, there was a financial crisis in New Zealand. Auckland (recalls the Star) was then the capital of the colony, and it is interesting to note that the public debt amounted to the “enormous’’ sum of £14,000, while the cash in the Treasury was only £l9 10s 3d, and in the Bank of Auckland 21s 3d. The position was relieved by the Government of South Australia tendering a surplus of specie toalling £6OOO “for the service of New Zealand.’’
