Reports to hand from the Mutton Bird Island indicate that the present season will be the most unsuccessful for many years, and some of the mutton-birders state that it will take them all their time to make expedition expenses (says the Southland News). Last year a!>out 24,000 birds were landed at Bluff, but it is estimated that this year s total will be 10,000 birds less. A visitor to Mount Cook during Easter states that the number of tourists at the Hermitage was in excess of previous Easters. 'The increase is attributed to the reduction in motor fares of nearly 50 per cent., and the tariff at the Hermitage.
