OPENING OF SEASON. opening of the Otago Chess Utub s season wae held in the clubrooms, Pnnces street, on the Ist, the president (Mr T. M. Gillies) occupying the chair. I here was a large attendance of members. The Chairman said that it gave him much pleasure to welcome the Mayor (Mr J. S Douglas) and the club members, and the large attendance augured well for the success of the year. The Mayor said that he felt honoured in bemg again asked to open the season, he had performed the opening function last year. Although h e did not play chess himself he read reports of tournaments with great interest. He hoped to take part in the hearty welcome which the Otago Chess Club would extend to Mr Kostich, the wellknown international player, who intends to visit New Zealand in the near future The speaker referred to Mr Davies, the Otago Chess Club member, who represented New Zealand in the Australasian championships and he regretted that Mr Dunlop could not go. He was pleased that Mr Davies had defeated Mr Yiner. Mr Douglas continued by expressing the hope that next year he would be a member of the Chess dub.— (Applause.) Mr Douglas congratulated the club members on their new rooms, which were infinitely superior to the old club quarters. The Chairman said that he greatly appreciated the Mayor’s remarks. The Otago Chess Club’s junior championship was won by Mr J. S. Botting, but, as the winner was not present, the Mayor was not able to hand over the medal. Play was then commenced, the match between President and Vice-president resulting in a win- for the President’s side by 13£ to 6g wins.
“Are the book debts good?” was asked a bankrupt during an examination in Christchurch. “I wouldn’t like to say; some of the gentlemen who owe the money are present,” replied the bankrupt.
