ATHLETICS.

THE ASHBURTON MEETING. ASHBURTON, January 25. Fine weather, and a hard, fast track were the favourable conditions for the South African’s appearance at Ashburton to-day. In the 76yds Emery, Bukes, and Kinsman all qualified for the final, which gave a close finish, Emery arriving third. In the 300yds Bukes did not start. Johnston won his heat easily, and looked a certain winner of the final but was bumped out of the running at the entrance to the straight. The final of the 120yds saw Bukes, Kinsman, and Emery qualified. A close finish left the result doubtful, but the decision went to Emery with Kinsman second. The latter came with a magnificent burst over the last 20 yards. The one mile championship of Canterbury ■was a slow race till the last lap which Taylor (the Australasian half-mile champion) and Leathern fought the whole way, Taylor getting home a yard ahead. Great things were expected of the Canterbury team in the relay, especially the middle district runners, Taylor and Ford, but Johnston accounted for Taylor over the first two laps and Leathern beat Ford in the next lap. The sprinters Bukes and Kinsman made no trouble of finishing first by 30 yards. Results : 75 YARDS HANDICAP.—MiIIer (siyds), I; Lewis (2yds), 2; Emery (4-ayds), 3.
