PNEUMONIC INFLUENZA

PREVALENCE IN SOUTH SEA ISLANDS. SUVA. October 3. The Solomon Islands report 252 cases of influenza, one being pneumonic. One death has occurred. Ocean Island reports 250 cases of a mild nature, no deaths having occurred. SYDNEY. October 7. The epidemic of influenza in the New Hebrides is now dying out. It caused 48 deaths in the hospitals and numbers outside. All were natives. OUTBREAK. AMONGST -MAORIS. LEVIN, October 8. An outbreak of pneumonic influenza of a serious character is reported from the Native pah at Muhunoa West, near Ohau. A fatal case was recorded in the middle of last month, the victim being a school girl. Tiie disease has developed since then at different points, and two more deaths of young children have occurred. The outbreak was not notified to the Health authorities until this week, when the district medical officer found 14 cases amongst adults and children. The authorities took prompt measures, a marquee to serve for a temporary hospital being erected yesterday, and all cases are being collected to-day. Nurse Lewis, Government Native nurse at Otaki, has been put in charge of the hospital pan, which has been isolated.
