EDWARD COSSGROVE THE ELUSIVE. INVERCARGILL, October 3. The man Rciward Oossgrove, whose conduct created great alarm in the Tuatapere district in .March last, and who so far has eluded all the efforts of the police to catch him while hiding in the bush, Las reappeared after a iong period of invisibility. A party of police is out scouring the neighbourhood. Cossgrovo is wanted on several elm rges. It is understood that Cossgrove is armed with a service rifle, and that he secures a portion of his food supply by the use of this weapon. An interesting story is told concerning an exploit by an ex-member of the L’olice Force, who voluntarily undertook to apprehend the fugitive singlehanded. He was armed with a revolver, and came across Cossgrove in the bush. The man sought for asked the ex-constable to hold up his hands, an order which he promptly obeyed. Cossgrove then went forward and relieved him of his revolver. He then tossed the weapon in the air, and smashed it to smithereens with a shot from his service rifle, and warned the ex-police-man to get home as fast as he could.
