LADIES’ TOURNAMENT OPENED. WELLINGTON, October 5. The la-dies’ golf tournament opened 1 to-day at tliei Horetaunga Links in beautiful weather, with the course end the greens in perfect order, and arrangements excellent. The first and second rounds were played with leading exponents coming through well. In the morning a special first round was played in connection with group 1 <,GG entries'!, the competitors being Miss Mantel 1 ■Wellington) and Mrs Godby (Christchurch). Miss Mantel! won, 8 up and G to play, and Miss Ormond being scratched in the succeeding round Miss Mantel 1 had a walk-over into the third round. Aiiss Snodgrass (Westport) beat Aiiss Brandon (Wellington), 2 up and 1 to play. Airs Orbell (North Otago) beat Alls Spiers (Waiwetu), 2 up and 1. to play. Muss Wright (Timaru) beat Aiiss Gambrill (Miramar), 2 up and 1 to play. Miss Budd (Timaru) beat Airs "Wilson (Westport) at the nineteenth hole. Alias Bell (Wellington) beat Aiiss Anderson (Christchurch), 4 up and 2 to play. Mrs Murphy (Ilutt) beat Miss E. Brown (Napier) at the twenty-first- hole. Alias Al. Payton (Auckland) beat Miss S. Payton (Auckland), 4 up and 3 to play. Aiiss Hehnore won the first division of tho Bogey Handicap, 3 up, and Airs Webster .the second division, 3 down. For the Coronation Aleda.l, Aiiss Snodgrass (S 3-7-76) tied with Mrs Webster (94-18-78). Mrs Guy Williams won the prize for the best straight-out score, S2. October 9. The fifth round of the New Zealand Ladies’ Golf Championship at Heretaunga provided one of the most exciting matches ever played in the competition, the contest between Aiiss Al. Payton (Auckland) and Mrs Murphy (Ilutt). The conditions were not of tho best, as light rain fell throughout the morning and the links were heavy. Tho play, however, was excellent, and intensely interesting. Miss Payton was 2 up at tho eighth hole, after which the game became even more closely contested. Hole after hole was halved until the 17th, at which, amidst much excitement, the same result occurred. There had thus been nine successive holes halved, leaving Miss Payton 2 up and 1 to play. Altogether 15 of the 17 holes were halved. In the other three matches there were two comfortable wins by Airs Williams (Alasterton) and Aiiss Bell (Wellington). Between Aiiss Wright (Timaru) and Airs R. Orbell (North Otago), however, there was another very keen contest, Miss Wright finishing 2 up and 1 to play. The result of the fifth round was as follows: Airs G. Williams beat Aiiss Snodgrass 6 up and 5 to play. Aiiss Wright beat Airs R. Orbell 2 up and 1 to play. Aiiss Bell beat Aiiss Budd 7 up and 5 to play. Aiiss Al. Payton beat Airs Alurphy 2 up and 1 to play. On Alonday the semi-final will be played, Aiiss M. Payton meeting Aiiss Bell, and Airs Williams meeting Aiiss Wright. In the afternoon a medal round was played for the Donnelly Cup. The best scores were as follow ; Gross. Ucp. Net.

The Teams’ Alatch resulted in a win for Alasterton (Aiiss Robieson 30, Airs Williams 83, Aiiss Murray 104, Airs Balfour 110; — total, 377). The Wellington team took 382, and the Auckland team the same, Aliramar 388, and Christchurch 396. Friday’s tie for the best gross score in the medal round resulted in a win for Airs Dodgshun (87), Aiiss Payton taking . 89. The tie for the Coronation Alatch resulted in favour of Aiiss Webster (85 net), Aiiss Snodgrass taking 87 net. The Alellsop Cup for the best total of the three medal competitions was wort by Airs Guy Williams (249). TOURNAMENT ENTRIES. CHRISTCHURCH, October 5. Aiiss Joyce Wethered won the English Ladies’ Golf Championship, defeating Airs Aludford 12 up and 11 to play. “NEWS OF THE WORLD ” COMPETITION. LONDON, October 16. In the semi-final of the News of the World golf competition, Gaudin beat Edward Ray, 3 up and 2 to play; Seymour beat Wingate, 3 up and 2 to play. October 8. In the final of the News of the World golf competitions Seymour won at the 40th hole from Gaudin. Both were affected with nervous strain, and gave a poor display, missing many putts.
