SCHOOLS’ AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

CHAMPIONSHIP SPORTS MEETING. Seven thousand school children with their parents and friends and others interested in athletics were present at the Carisbrook Ground on Saturday when the Ot-ago Public Schools’ Amateur Athletic Association conducted a most successful championship sports meeting. The weather was tine but a somewhat keen wind proved unpleasant. The competitors did not, lack supporters as the ground was surrounded j with hundreds of cheering children and intense interest- was displayed in the events, which included running- races of various distances, girls’ skipping and relay races, sack i races, broad and high jump competitions, ! and potato races. The times recorded for the running events are an indication of j tite high standard of the juvenile athletes ; of Otago. All the city and suburban pub- ; lie schools competed, and tile Oamaru South : and YVaitaki Boys’ High Schools were also | represented. Music was supplied during the day by the .Albany Street and North-East A alley School Bands. Amongst- the more interesting events was a massed display by tiie children, t-o the number of several hundred, under the direction of Mr A. P. Roydhouse. Boys and gills were included, and all the movements in the physical drill were gone through with neatness and precision. At the conclusion of the ! drill the girls gave an interesting exhij bition of old country dancing. The series j of tabloid events was an innovation in Dunedin, and it is believed in New Zealand. The events consisted of various forms of athletics, such as running, jumping, etc., and the special object was to provide an opportunity for a display of all-round excellence. The results were based on the aggregate points gained ; Macandrevv Road School coming first with 42.8, and Musselburgh School a very close second with 42. Sixteen schools compc-tcd ; each school being represented by eight competitors. Credit is due to all the officials, especially Mr IT. Divers, t.he energetic secretary, who saw that all the events were run off tip to time, and who was always ready to give assistance. Mr J. T. Hamann acted as referee and Mr J. Duncan as starter. The track judges were Messrs A. Burk, E. L. Maeassey, and M. Cowen; and the field judges .Messrs P. Priest, X. Barton, J. V. Ilanna, A. P. Roydhouse, and AY. J. Bennett.
