CASUALTIES.

The body of Charles Squires, aged 68, a recent arrival from Canada, was found on the Tararu beach, Thames, on the 3rd. Letters indicated that he intended committing suicide. Hugh Opery, aged 60 years, was found dead in a paddock at Utiku. He had been ailing for some time, and evidently committed suicide by exploding a plug of gelignite in his mouth, as the head aaid one hand were blown off. Herbert Markham Wright-, inspector of the Colonial Mutual Insurance Company, was killed at 6 p.m. on the 4th inst. near Lower Hurt through a motor cycle ho was riding crashing into a fence. An unidentified man, who was in the sidecar, is lying unconscious in the Lower Hutt Hospital. | Mr Wright’s widow resides at Lyall Bay. At. about 8 p.m. on the 3rd a lad about 14 years of age, the son of Air Buekland, had the misfortune to get his left hand caught in the cog wheels of a seed sower. The hand was severely lacerated on both hack and front, and the little finger had to be amputated. Dr W. B. Reekie performing the operation. The hand was fully half an hour in the cogs before being released. The companion of Mr 11. M. Wright, who was killed on the Hutt road last week, was Mr Cecil Love, one of the Colonial Mutual Life Insurance Company’s agents. lie sustained severe injuries to the face, but his condition is satisfactory. A man named Peter M’Kinnon, aged about 40 years, was found dead on the roadside at Kakatalii on the sth. The deceased had been working in the locality for about four days, and previously had resided at Itaetihi. David M'Murray, a Waitaln.ma Gully settler, had a very narrow escape from death on Monday, 3rd inst. He was taking a calf in a trap to a neighbour, and when it commenced to struggle he looked round with the result that tiie trap went over the bank, completely capsizing. Mr M'Murray was caught, across the neck, but fortunately the wheel rested on the calf, thus keeping off some of the pressure. Mr M'Murray -was not found until some two hours later, when he was in a very exhausted condition. lie is now making satisfactory progress. A retired farmer named Thomas William Stare, aged 73 years, expired suddenly at Wellington on the 7th. inst,. while wheeling his invalid daughter in a bath chair. He is believed to have had heart affection tor some time. An elderly woman, Mrs Sarah Rogers, belonging to New Plymouth, who had been on a visit to Canterbury, died on the Wel-lington-Now Plymouth mail train a few miles from Palmerston North on the 7th inst. tier body was removed to the Palmerston Morgue, and an inquest will be held. hhe was accompanied by her son. aged 11 years. At the adjourned inquest concerning the death of James Nathan Ahr ham. who died as the result, of being knocked down bv .a car driven by Donald ,Scott on September 15, the coroner found that death was due to’ concussion, hemorrhage, and laceration of the brain, caused by a collision.
